A Summer of Volunteers!
Did you know that Black Lake Bible Camp has a growing volunteer team who help with projects and needs around Camp? It’s true! Since autumn of last year, our full-time staffer (and former summer staffer) Collin, “Delorean,” has served as our volunteer coordinator and has been helping that program become a success.
In the Spring quarter, over 350 hours of volunteer time was donated to Camp, not including the time given by our wonderful volunteers and summer staff at the Work & Worship, which itself was another 120+ hours of help! This summer we’ve had the assistance of many volunteers either on an individual basis or though the SOWERs volunteering program, with total hours currently upwards of 480 and counting.
SOWERs are volunteers with unique or much-needed skillsets who come on site to camps and organizations to help with projects, and we’ve had the privilege to host month-long SOWER groups in July and now in August. As you might have seen on our social media pages, our July SOWERs took on the task of putting in the new BB Range over in Harmony Springs as well as providing much-needed helping hands in the kitchen during some of our busiest weeks. They also helped in the Camp store when we were short on staff, running the register and helping keep lines manageable as our Day Campers poured through the doors. Our August group has been helping with renovations on our Pinewood cabin, providing extensive help with rewiring, drywall replacement, and even moving a wall! But that’s not all they’ve accomplished; near the end of last month, we purchased a tiny home from the local YWAM chapter, and the SOWERs have helped us repaint it in and out to help spruce it up (tree pun intended). While it remains nameless for the time being, this tiny home will soon be another cabin to help house staff, volunteers, or guest groups and we’re grateful for their help in getting it hosting-worthy.
Our individual volunteers have also provided so much help, and words can’t express all they’ve given us. From parking lot painting, to food delivery unpacking, to kitchen help and all sorts of things in between, every volunteer hour is a meaningful one. Because of their hard work, we’re able to accomplish so much more than we typically could have capacity for during the busy summer season!
